What are Net Carbs?

When you start a low carb diet you will hear people refer to something called net carbs.  Net carbs are calculated by taking the total carbs subtracting the fiber content and any sugar alcohols.

For example, if a food has 22 total carbs, 5 grams of fiber you would do 22-5=17 net carbs

Now lets look at a food label:

So as you can see above at the green arrow, broccoli has 6g of carbs and 2.4 (lets say 2 grams of fiber).  To calculate the net carbs you subtract 6g-2g= 4g of total carbs in 1 cup of broccoli.

If you are unsure where to start finding low carb foods, check out the list from the official Atkins website.  You can also plug any food you are not sure about into the USDA Search to get the nutritional information on just about any food.

See it is easy as that. Don't forget to calculate net carbs, even for your low carb snacks! If you have any questions be sure to ask in the comments below.

So if 15 grams = 1 carb, do we count carbs or grams????????

Admin - July 22, 2016

15 grams does not equal 1 carb.

You take Total Carbs and subtract grams of fiber.

ie 20 total carbs – 5 fiber grams = 15 net carbs. Hope this helps.

    Hi Nalini,

It depends a lot of people when starting low carb keep total net carbs under 20 for the day. You are eating everyone 2 hours? How many times per day?
